HIGH SCHOOL & HIGHER SECONDARY:
It is nothing short of a miracle that modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry, Albert Einstein said in 1949. Fast forward to 2019. It is nothing but a battle to save children from aspirational parents eyeing professional courses, civil society aiming to groom conscious citizens and industries looking for employability skills. It remains an uphill task for educationist to craft an ideal curriculum to meet the real needs of a heterogeneous society of ours.
While designing a new curriculum, experts invariably face familiar challenges such as
- Rote learning Aided by predictable examination pattern
- Lack of analytical skills due to reliance on theoretical approach rather than a problem solving one
- Absence of contemporary issues leading to a disconnect between the real world and
- Lack of fluency even in vernacular languages.
The situation in Tamil Nadu is no different. The much awaited reforms began with redesigning of the format of the text book and its contents. Positioned as the window to the world of wisdom, these new textbooks tend to blend technology in a major way and have features such as case studies, concept maps, web links, QR codes, information and communication technology leading to educational web resources and mobile apps. Hence the new textbooks were redesigned to give due importance to problem solving. So, explanation of projectile motion, illustration of traditional games are being used. But most importantly the books are not just about being prepared for competitive exams, its an opportunity to develop an interest in subjects to pursue a career in future. Through the national educational platform, students are motivated to make use of the DHIKSHA app and a YouTube video lessons for further reference.
